Abstract
Floral diversity is one of nature’s most remarkable phenomena. Although the classical ABCE model explains floral organ identity specification, it does not fully account for the unique floral architecture of orchids. We proposed the Perianth Code (P-code) model, demonstrating that distinct combinations of B-class (AP3) and A/E-class (OAGL6) genes form SP and L complexes that specify sepals/petals and the specialized lip, respectively. This model reveals how precise genetic regulation generates intricate variations in floral morphology. Furthermore, we investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying floral architecture, morphology, pigmentation, flowering time, senescence, and abscission, aiming to decode the developmental blueprint of flowers and open new avenues for innovation in floral biotechnology and agricultural applications.
